Young with BIG Basketball Dreams!

September 27-29 2013 | National Girls Select Invitational Basketball Camp | Atlanta, Georgia

When Aerial Wilson received the email from Ganon Baker Basketball saying “Congratulations you have you have been selected to come to our “Live” NCAA College Coach – National Girls Event…”, she jumped at the opportunity.

[caption id="attachment_6408" align="alignnone" width="650"]Aerial Wilson By the end of the third day camp another piece of bristol board was added with the addition of many more Universities.[/caption]

Unaware of the tremendous talent in the Deep South and the only Canadian invited, Aerial’s goal was to learn from the experience. The weekend presented itself with an abundance of skill training, testing, game experience and a ton of basketball knowledge. Some of the top ranked basketballers from grade 7-12 in the country attended. The athletes, families and coaches were very supportive and encouraged all involved. The number 1-2 ranked player in the USA, A'ja Wilson is an exceptional athlete to watch and phenomenal young lady. Knowing Aerial was the youngest at camp she took some time to speak with her. To have a mentor speak about the hard work and sacrifice she makes everyday really grabs Aerial's attention.

[caption id="attachment_6402" align="alignnone" width="650"]Aja Wilson Aerial Wilson and A'ja Wilson (Team USA, #2 Ranked Player)[/caption]

Aerial is in love with basketball. At 11yrs old she wants an academic/athletic scholarship and to play in the WNBA. “I’m gonna dunk”, she states with conviction.

David Omerod of Saltfleet High School organizes the Ganon Baker basketball camp every year (2012 Video, 2013 Post). MJ was six months pregnant running the camp with Ganon in August. An amazing role model to watch, as she did push-ups, drills and inspired the young athletes. It was MJ who saw Aerial’s potential and believed Aerial is talented enough to attend the Girls National Skills Select Showcase.

Aerial Wilson: “Ganon Baker’s camp is the best. It gives me a new, tougher basketball mentality. It makes me a bigger threat on the court with more knowledge and moves. When I was approached by Ganon himself, I was thrilled and overjoyed to be invited to an NCAA camp. Originally I had to wait a couple of more years, but my countless hours of practice and hard work paid off.  Everyday I think of my dreams and passion for basketball.  I am now one step closer to my goal.”

Unfortunately MJ and Ganon Baker could not attend expecting at almost 9 months. Everyone at the camp wish the couple all the best. Kelly Kline, Editor of Full Court “Your Ticket Inside Women’s Basketball” and her team ran an exceptional event.

Aerial-Atlanta_650

Aerial Wilson: “On the first day of camp, I couldn’t stop thinking about how big the girls were. I wasn’t going to let height hinder my performance. I played aggressive, strong and confident with the ball. I gave my best on both ends of the court, always trying to be a part of the play. I had some moments and a lot of room to grow. Playing along side and against some the top ranked players in the nation is an honor. I met so many great people and learned a lot from this camp. Playing against these girls has made me jump higher, run faster, pound harder, stronger and tougher. This experience has shown me what I need to do to accomplish my goals and live my dream. Thank you!!!!!”

Team Ignition ran a series of tests to analyze athleticism of the girls. Aerial had a 22" vertical and ranked 9th overall in lateral agility out of 130 athletes tested. More results to come.

The girls of The Full Court Fresh 50 Invitational had the honor of meeting Basketball Legend Chamique Holdsclaw. Prior the game Holdsclaw has a heart to heart with the girls about her basketball career path to the WNBA.

Slam Dunks to Dunkaroos! I am a huge fan of Dr. J (Julius Winfield Erving II) and I want to be entertained! Dunking a basketball is exciting and basketball players are getting more and more creative. Many people are not blessed with the ability to jump over 6' & only dream of dunking like a pro. Visualization is half the battle, so as a photographer I can make real time images. With the aid of technology & specific equipment, I am able to shoot different angles, be creative with my athletes developing their mental image to peak performance realty!  [More]

Real Basketball Mentors Making Time!

What an amazing surprise for the girls at David Johnson Basketball Camp. Natalie Achonwa is arguably one of the best women’s basketball players EVER. A seasoned veteran on the international circuit. Natalie is Canada’s youngest Senior Basketball team member at the age of 16. She is a 2012 London Olympian, FIBA World Championship Competitor and repetitive Final Four NCAA Contender. Achonwa is the first international player to suit up for Notre Dame in the program's 36-year history-Read More about Natalie Achonwa-University of Notre Dame [Here]

The Hamilton girls were preparing for fall tryouts at David Johnson’s elite basketball girls camp, when Natalie walks in. In awe of the hometown St. Mary's Catholic Secondary School Graduate, the girls gathered in close to take in every word. Natalie explained the discipline and hard work it takes to get a scholarship to university.

DJ-Nat

DJ’s daughter, Little Ms. Jayda made the trip from North Carolina. She stole the hearts of all the Canadian basketballers. Jayda is a big fan of Natalie’s and caught a few games with her family leading up to the NCAA women’s basketball championships last year. Natalie took some time out of her busy schedule to take some playful snaps with all her fans.

Actually Natalie is so easy going, she stood with each girl from the camp for a photograph opportunity [More Photographs].  It means the world to these girls to meet a basketball mentor like Natalie Achonwa. A heartfelt thank you goes out to Natalie as she signs a few autographs for her adoring fans.

Photographing in dimly lit gyms with natural and various light can be a challenge for any photographer. The temperature is ever changing. In a natural sunlit gym, the sun moves east to west. Intermittent pops of sun beam in from windows, skylights and open doors. This light can be unpredictable because of the environment outside...Never mind the consistent movement inside.

light

The backlight on your subject  may be balanced or harsh shadows cast depending on where the action takes you. The most important thing is getting the shot. You can tweak noise and white balance after in post, but ya have to be agile. Anticipate how someone will jump/move predicts how you are going to frame your subject.  If that means you have to move, do it. Sometimes random movement of a player, referee or ball will disrupt your focus or frame too. Don't worry this happens to everyone.

_RLW5095-Edit

Getting unique angles will depend on the movement you are trying to capture. If your lens is to close, focus in tighter on the eyes and get an over the shoulder shot, through the arm, low angle up. Don't be afraid to lay on the ground or get a ladder to go high.  You want to be different on your perspective and make your image different from the rest. Timing is everything. When photographing action watching with two eyes helps.

_RLW5392

Do your best with full frame and leveling off with with leading lines on the floor, windows, doors, equipment, wall decor such as pennants etc. It doesn't need to be perfect but balance the photo or eliminate busy distractions for your subject to stand out. Sometimes you just see a moment and need to pop a shot!

_RLW4978

Over 100+ athletes and no rhyme or reason to whom I photograph. They were like little busy bumble bees flying around the gym, zzzzzzip, zzzzzzz-zzzzzip! When something grabs my attention I try to hone in and work every possible angle to get the best shot. I learn my subject and if I don't get it the first time and I have another opportunity, I zone in to capture the moment. I do my best to photograph every child so they are not excluded, but my best photographs must include 3 basic elements: expression, action and technical perfection (clarity, rule of thirds, wb...)

_RLW4873

Ok I'll just do this once....My professional colleagues may think I'm crazy to post 1000's of photos for clients to discover. Yes it is a lot of work, but my logic is that you may find beauty in an image that only you connect with and no one else understands. For example: You may look like someone in your family because of the expression you are making, Funny habits like sticking your tongue out when you concentrate, Intimate body language that only you appreciate, Special moments that you personally value etc.

Ganon Time on Hammer Time…Woohooo!

It was Ganon time on Hammer time last week! Outstanding coaching and basketballers eager to learn is any formula for success. Due to weather and unforeseen circumstances the original gym was flooded upon arrival. The parents were very patient and understanding of the situation as the organizers found a new gym that morning. Dave Omerod and your staff...Once again fabulous job organizing another memorable basketball camp! Gotta Love Saltfleet HS! Ready...Let's Go! The warm up was intense with discipline and lots of pushups. This camp is for improving and digging deep to mentally and physically challenge yourself, in and out of the classroom. I was completely impressed with MJ who is 6 months pregnant doing pushup to technical perfection. An inspiration to any athlete, parent or coach.

Ganon2

I loved the the fun "Wood"socks running and jumping around the gym on the last day to honor the spirit of Sydney Wood.  It was a celebratory day with lots of photo bombing, high fives, chest bumps and shirt signing.

At the end of camp this year a very special award was given out to two 11 yr old campers Skyler Rajasingham and Katie Dal Bello. Greg and Sue Wood presented both athletes with the Sydney Wood Spirit Award:

_RLW4044

"Our Daughter Sydney's spirit is vibrant, dynamic energetic and sparkling! So our family is extremely proud of joining in partnership with the Gannon Baker camp to award the first annual "Sydney Wood Spirit Award" to two campers who exemplify that kind and caring spirit during their time at camp. Sydney used the time at camp to improve her basketball skills but also to encourage ,support and cheer her fellow campers. We hope this award is a small stepping stone to keeping Sydney's kind and caring nature alive in the thoughts and hearts of those who know her and in those who get to know her through others. Our goal is to ensure that the children who exhibit that "Sydney Spirit" in the community are recognized and encouraged , and Sydney's spirit continues to sparkle as she is forever with us." Other work in progress is the amazing DYSC U10 Boys Photoshoot...Now not trying to brag-BUT when you have kids who can do bicycle kicks and others who push through a photoshoot not feeling well and you get shots like this...I'd say full on Team Effort!  Always working on my specialty dunk shots and sometimes I just see a moment I need to capture, so follow me on my social media network to see the latest and greatest!

March Madness Camera Action!

After getting home from Bahamas we were off to the Sparta Classic Basketball Tournament at Michigan State. Transway met up with the Indiana G3 Hoosiers, a National (USA) Ranked #2 team.  It was an exciting game to say the least. The basketball rules are very different in the United States. I believe it certainly develops better players and refereeing to a much more elite level.

The March break began with a tournament in Jordan, Ontario. The Dundas Select team played very well and had a lot of fun in Niagara Falls at the hotel...Not much sleep-FUN-FUN-FUN! I really enjoyed meeting Barry from Digital Sports Photography. DSP was shooting the tournament and selling prints/cd of the action.  They did a great job and I look forward to working with Barry,DSP in the future. [Digital Sports Photography]

David Johnson (DJ) ran his 2013 March Break Elite Basketball Camp at Annunciation Catholic School, Hamilton-ON. The camp was very inspiring with daily quotes to ponder, a commemorative t-shirt fund in honour of Sydney Wood, intense strength & conditioning training, advance skill assessment and motivational coaching. It was wonderful to see the camaraderie among athletes from all teams come together.

Westcott Lighting recently awarded me with the 2400-watt 2-Light Spiderlite TD6 Perfect Portrait Kit & Icelight. I wanted to make my first project memorable and help pass it forward. The kids at the David Johnson March Break Camp have a passion for basketball. My compassion for Sydney has made me value these young years forever. On the last day of camp I did basketball sport portraits for all the athletes. I am very happy with the Westcott Pro Lighting results and plan to do a review in the future. Ganon Baker Skill Workout Basketball Camp

On the last day of the Ganon Baker Skill Workout Basketball Camp I took some snaps of the athletes and coaches. I was throughly impressed with the intensity, motivation and keeping it real attitude. Even though the hard work brought tears, exhaustion and determination, there were a lot of smiles and high five's to go around the gym. This camp challenges athletes on the court and in the classroom. It tests you to succeed to the next level...AND if your ready to take a money ball ($-DVD-Nike's) YOU might just get it in if you believe!!!!  Congratulations to all the athletes, coaches and organizers for working together to bring Ganon Baker Basketball to Canada!

Quick Tease-Ganon Baker Camp (Canadian Style)

I had an opportunity to shoot the Ganon Baker Camp at Saltfleet High School this past week. The coaches, parents and athletes were absolutely fabulous! More images of the camp, Ganon and his fabulous coaching team will be posted this week. Check out Dave Johnson (DJ) in this alley way composite. DJ signs his signature "-talent is a gift, hard work a choice". I took an image taken from the Toronto Google+ photowalk to make the composite.

Jamar_650 Here's another quick tease....Jamar Coke of Hamilton treated the kids and I with some fancy moves above the rim. All I can say is WOW!!!!! Gotta thank Dave Omerod for bringing this amazing talent together for a GREAT week of basketball. The Kids LOVED the Ganon Baker Camp! More Images Coming Soon...
