What Can I learn Today?

Let’s get personal…Could I do better…Yes!  I may be my biggest critic, but I put myself out there everyday with fear of failure. I focus, I’m determined, but really I’m nervous. I think it’s just human nature to be scared of the unknown-worried to disappoint. How do you get better if you don’t take risks? Life lesson from my daughter today http://www.hamiltonscores.com/2013/10/16/no-camp-fire-sing-songs-basketball-hopeful-had-a-ball/

I recently put together my Sports & Industrial Accreditation for PPOC-Professional Photographers of Canada. It’s my first time applying and it is really hard to get your “Accreditation”-AND it should be, these are the best of the best photographers who are experts in their field. I wanted to show my versatility of sport shooting. In 1996, I bought my first professional camera body for the World Cup Lacrosse. It was film and compared to today’s standards, it’s hard to get a great digital copy. Because these were my first publications I felt it necessary to include them.

[nggallery id=123]

Oh what a learning week! I’m used to shooting a certain way, but I am always trying to streamline my workflow. I set myself apart from other photographers with my creative post process abilities. I love seeing something in an image and making art out of it, but that’s when you have time.  The Dundas Museum and Archives with Carnegie Gallery asked for submissions for “My Dundas”. Dyment’s Farm and The Peak are two of my most favorite places. I shot a panoramic of Dyment’s Farm for their 125th Celebration Cookbook. I had a hard time getting it printed and framed properly because of the irregular size, but I think the end result is fabulous. Again trying a new print process, I had “Train Below The Peak” printed on a 20x30 pearlescent paper. I’d say it certainly makes an impact.

MyDundas-o

I tested out the Nikon 300mm/f2.8 and D4 at the DMHA-Hamilton Bulldogs Hockey Fundraiser.  Full image gallery coming soon! Still in love with my D3s, but salivating over the 300mm lens. OMG $$$$$-But so worth it!  I am very grateful to be a member of NPS, but forgot to look at time and date metadata on the D4. Argh, it was set for another country, so sorting images is a nightmare.  Oh not to mention ran out of space on my computer and accidentally deleted my Lr file :(

_RLW8026

Brandon Taylor-Hamilton Bulldogs Team Photographer invited me to photograph the Home Opener at Copps Coliseum. It was such a privilege to work with Brandon. “You’re not afraid of heights?” he asks. To the catwalk we go and turn on the strobes. I have never used strobes in Copps Coliseum and wasn’t sure if my PocketWizard TT1 would sync. Did a few test shots with the fisheye above “Et Voila!”

Fisheye-Ice-Surface

So going back to the unknown. Brandon was kind enough to share his strobes. So we split the ice, therefore shooting half the game. I've never shot this way and was terrified of triggering his strobes or interfering with his photography. There were many moments that I wanted to poach on his end because I had a great shot…No worries, I was pretty timid. Using the 400mm at center ice has its advantages, especially with goalie shots and an angle above that you can't get on the boards at ice level.

_RLW2362

OK remember I’m human and I don’t know the venue. So you know those paper media passes they give you, like the Golden Ticket to Willie Wonka’s Chocolate Factory? Mine fell off…Phew I eventually found it, but I could get into the media room without it. It didn’t help that I don’t know my way around the facility. Got the bugs worked out by the end of the night. I now know Copps Coliseum from the top of the catwalk to the basement parking lot.

_RLW2212

For the rest of the game I worked around ice hotspots, reflections, sticky fingers and smudges on the glass. Went back to the way I normally photograph-Fast and Furious. Got some great shots of the fans, had an awesome time and can’t wait to shoot again! Now for those who know me, I was supposed to photograph the Calder Cup last year with Scott Thomas-Syracuse Crunch Team Photographer. On my way down for game seven, but didn't get there because it ended in game 6...Arghhhhh! Hey just gonna put it out there...Team Photographer for Hire! Yup Right Here!

Bulldogs Shutout Comets in Dundas

Source: Bulldogs Communication | Hamilton Scores | October 3rd, 2013 | J.L. Grightmire Arena

Hamilton Bulldogs rookie forward Sven Andrighetto scored the only goal of the game at 3:57 of the second period to lift the ‘Dogs to a 1-0 pre-season win over new division rivals, the Utica Comets, Thursday (Oct 3) evening at J.L. Grightmire Market Street Arena in Dundas, Ontario.

Andreghetti

Things opened slowly in the first period. The excitement of the opening frame was a fight between Hamilton forward Jordan Owens and Utica forward David Pacan. Owens dropped Comets forward Alex Friesen with a big hit at the Utica blueline before Pacan stepped in looking to settle the score. After one, the two teams were scoreless.

Fight Owens

Andrighetto scored the only goal of the night nearly four minutes into the second period when he ripped a feed from defenceman Nathan Beaulieu off the post and in.

Rookie Goal

Utica pressed hard to tie in the third period, but Hamilton goaltender Dustin Tokarski, who replaced starter Robert Mayer midway through the second, held the fort for the Bulldogs.

Mayer and Tokarski combined to make 28 saves for the shutout. Joacim Eriksson played the entire game for Utica, making 19 saves on 20 shots.

Hamilton Bulldogs Goalie

Hamilton went 0-for-4 on the power play. Utica went 0-for-2.

Scoring Summary

1st Period: No scoring

2nd Period: HAM – Sven Andrighetto – (Nathan Beaulieu) – 3:57

3rd Period: No scoring

Great times in Dundas last night! A Big Thank You to the Hamilton Bulldogs organization for assisting the DMHA in their fundraising efforts. Congratulations Bulldogs on your 1-0 win over The Utica Comets.

Young with BIG Basketball Dreams!

September 27-29 2013 | National Girls Select Invitational Basketball Camp | Atlanta, Georgia

When Aerial Wilson received the email from Ganon Baker Basketball saying “Congratulations you have you have been selected to come to our “Live” NCAA College Coach – National Girls Event…”, she jumped at the opportunity.

[caption id="attachment_6408" align="alignnone" width="650"]Aerial Wilson By the end of the third day camp another piece of bristol board was added with the addition of many more Universities.[/caption]

Unaware of the tremendous talent in the Deep South and the only Canadian invited, Aerial’s goal was to learn from the experience. The weekend presented itself with an abundance of skill training, testing, game experience and a ton of basketball knowledge. Some of the top ranked basketballers from grade 7-12 in the country attended. The athletes, families and coaches were very supportive and encouraged all involved. The number 1-2 ranked player in the USA, A'ja Wilson is an exceptional athlete to watch and phenomenal young lady. Knowing Aerial was the youngest at camp she took some time to speak with her. To have a mentor speak about the hard work and sacrifice she makes everyday really grabs Aerial's attention.

[caption id="attachment_6402" align="alignnone" width="650"]Aja Wilson Aerial Wilson and A'ja Wilson (Team USA, #2 Ranked Player)[/caption]

Aerial is in love with basketball. At 11yrs old she wants an academic/athletic scholarship and to play in the WNBA. “I’m gonna dunk”, she states with conviction.

David Omerod of Saltfleet High School organizes the Ganon Baker basketball camp every year (2012 Video, 2013 Post). MJ was six months pregnant running the camp with Ganon in August. An amazing role model to watch, as she did push-ups, drills and inspired the young athletes. It was MJ who saw Aerial’s potential and believed Aerial is talented enough to attend the Girls National Skills Select Showcase.

_RLW5460

Aerial Wilson: “Ganon Baker’s camp is the best. It gives me a new, tougher basketball mentality. It makes me a bigger threat on the court with more knowledge and moves. When I was approached by Ganon himself, I was thrilled and overjoyed to be invited to an NCAA camp. Originally I had to wait a couple of more years, but my countless hours of practice and hard work paid off.  Everyday I think of my dreams and passion for basketball.  I am now one step closer to my goal.”

Unfortunately MJ and Ganon Baker could not attend expecting at almost 9 months. Everyone at the camp wish the couple all the best. Kelly Kline, Editor of Full Court “Your Ticket Inside Women’s Basketball” and her team ran an exceptional event.

Aerial-Atlanta_650

Aerial Wilson: “On the first day of camp, I couldn’t stop thinking about how big the girls were. I wasn’t going to let height hinder my performance. I played aggressive, strong and confident with the ball. I gave my best on both ends of the court, always trying to be a part of the play. I had some moments and a lot of room to grow. Playing along side and against some the top ranked players in the nation is an honor. I met so many great people and learned a lot from this camp. Playing against these girls has made me jump higher, run faster, pound harder, stronger and tougher. This experience has shown me what I need to do to accomplish my goals and live my dream. Thank you!!!!!”

Team Ignition ran a series of tests to analyze athleticism of the girls. Aerial had a 22" vertical and ranked 9th overall in lateral agility out of 130 athletes tested. More results to come.

The girls of The Full Court Fresh 50 Invitational had the honor of meeting Basketball Legend Chamique Holdsclaw. Prior the game Holdsclaw has a heart to heart with the girls about her basketball career path to the WNBA.

The Full Court Fresh 50 Invitational National Game featured girls basketball players ranking in the top 100 and was followed by a Regional Game. http://www.fullcourt.com/prep/24104/stars-shine-expected-full-court-fresh-50-invitational Both Games were streamed live on FullCourt.com and the iHigh Network. Commentators for the games will be ESPN women's basketball analyst Nell Fortner and Full Court/Max Preps staff writer Clay Kallam.

At the end of the Full Court Fresh 50 Invitational National Game Chamique Holdsclaw embraces the opportunity to present the MVP award to fellow New Yorker Sierra Calhoun. Slam Dunks to Dunkaroos! I am a huge fan of Dr. J (Julius Winfield Erving II) and I want to be entertained! Dunking a basketball is exciting and basketball players are getting more and more creative. Many people are not blessed with the ability to jump over 6' & only dream of dunking like a pro. Visualization is half the battle, so as a photographer I can make real time images. With the aid of technology & specific equipment, I am able to shoot different angles, be creative with my athletes developing their mental image to peak performance realty!  [More]

Real Basketball Mentors Making Time!

What an amazing surprise for the girls at David Johnson Basketball Camp. Natalie Achonwa is arguably one of the best women’s basketball players EVER. A seasoned veteran on the international circuit. Natalie is Canada’s youngest Senior Basketball team member at the age of 16. She is a 2012 London Olympian, FIBA World Championship Competitor and repetitive Final Four NCAA Contender. Achonwa is the first international player to suit up for Notre Dame in the program's 36-year history-Read More about Natalie Achonwa-University of Notre Dame [Here]

The Hamilton girls were preparing for fall tryouts at David Johnson’s elite basketball girls camp, when Natalie walks in. In awe of the hometown St. Mary's Catholic Secondary School Graduate, the girls gathered in close to take in every word. Natalie explained the discipline and hard work it takes to get a scholarship to university.

DJ-Nat

DJ’s daughter, Little Ms. Jayda made the trip from North Carolina. She stole the hearts of all the Canadian basketballers. Jayda is a big fan of Natalie’s and caught a few games with her family leading up to the NCAA women’s basketball championships last year. Natalie took some time out of her busy schedule to take some playful snaps with all her fans.

Actually Natalie is so easy going, she stood with each girl from the camp for a photograph opportunity [More Photographs].  It means the world to these girls to meet a basketball mentor like Natalie Achonwa. A heartfelt thank you goes out to Natalie as she signs a few autographs for her adoring fans.

Soccer Flare

It was an amazing year for these u10B DYSC talented soccer players. I always get excited to see the peoples expression when they get their composites or prints.  I wanted to try a new concept with full sun and natural lens flare. The shoot was outside on the pitch starting at 5pm...probably on the hottest day of the year! The sun started out pretty strong where it was filtered with a large black muslin over the soccer net. I used Nikon remote small flash with two 7' Westcott Parabolic Umbrellas. A reflector and Westcott Ice Light was used on occasion. The boys were encouraged to do whatever they wanted.  I did my best to capture it.  Soccer-Flare_650

As the sun moved and changed intensity we also moved to one available soft light coming from above. Photoshop, Lightroom, Nik Software and the Wacom Cintiq was used for extraction and design. So much character came from the headshots. I love working with the kids. Some need a little more time to get there, but when they do....WoW! I don't like to rush it and in the end it is so much worth it. I gotta say thankyou to all the coaches, manager, parent volunteers and families for being incredible people to work with. Although photography is my job, its means so much more when the experience is wonderfully memorable! Headshots_650 Now this is funny...Cassidy Ross drew this photo of me photographing (THANK YOU-THANK YOU-THANK YOU).  I must photograph like this a lot because my friend Scott Thomas just sent me a photograph doing the exact same thing. When shooting in The Valley of Fire, in Las Vegas my friend Mike Ingold sent me another similar photo. I am surrounded by talented people who inspire me to keep creating and I am forever grateful....THANK YOU!!!!!

The City of Waterfalls

It's hard not to go waterfall hopping when you live in the "City of Waterfalls". My friend Scott Thomas and Merrie joined me from NY and in one day we visited over 10 waterfalls. Some were spectacular and some were not so great! Midsummer is difficult because the water is not flowing as much and the scenery is overcrowded with onlookers. For a photographer ambiance is everything and it's nice to catch a sunset or sunrise too.

[caption id="attachment_6316" align="alignnone" width="650"]Scott Tiffany Tiffany Falls, Ancaster, ON[/caption]

We started out in the morning to view Webster's Falls, Tew's Falls, Pioneer Falls, Darnley's Cascade. By mid noon we photographed the spectacular Sherman Falls and Albion Falls. The day ended at Tiffany Falls in Ancaster. There was no water running down Felker's Falls, a few of the smaller falls or the Devil's Punchbowl Falls. Regardless the Hamilton City view was nice to see from the lookout. [More about Hamilton Waterfalls]

[caption id="attachment_6314" align="alignnone" width="650"]Sherman Falls Sherman Falls, Ancaster, ON[/caption]

Because there is no control of the elements on the day of an excursion, the best thing to do is make the best of it.  NO! NO! NO! don't photograph directly into the sun...you can't do that....the photo will not turn out. At the mercy of full sun, I just did that.  I have been in awe of lens flare and sunblown images since I started looking at photographs. I believe it evokes a sense of character and emotion to the image. A new series "soccer lens flare" will be posted soon.

[caption id="attachment_6319" align="alignnone" width="650"]Albion Sun Albion Falls, Hamilton, ON[/caption]

I am local to the area and very privileged to be able to photograph the Hamilton waterfalls anytime during any season. Unfortunately many visitors make the trip only to find caution tape or security guards limiting the access to our beautiful waterfalls. A letter by Tracey Carr of Greensville was published in the Dundas Star [Read Article].  It describes the frustrating conversation I had with my fellow photographers from New York. The photos in the marketing material show waterfalls from inaccessible areas. Kinda disappointing for a photographer trying to get a similar shot! _____________________________________________________________________________________ The lookout is the only vantage point to photograph Websters Falls. A wrought iron fence and security guard deter people from accessing the trail to the bottom.

[caption id="attachment_6318" align="alignnone" width="650"]Websters Top Websters Falls, Dundas, ON-2013[/caption]

[caption id="attachment_6317" align="alignnone" width="650"]Websters Bottom Websters Falls, Dundas, ON-2006[/caption]

I had a great day photographing with Scott and Merrie. Websters Falls has so many beautiful features besides waterfalls. I enjoy shooting backgrounds for my composites. I am currently working on one for the Westcott Shootout this year (soooooo excited to share it). The background image below lends itself to an interesting photo on it's own too [Fisheye 10.5mm at  f10 |1/200]

[caption id="attachment_6313" align="alignnone" width="650"]Robins Background Websters Falls Park, Dundas, ON[/caption] Scott and Merrie, Thank YOU for a wonderful waterfall day in Hamilton! My favorite moment was when I called my friend Tara for directions and I complained about the falls being dried up...She replies, "Well if you're trying to find some falls with water, have you heard of Niagara Falls?" Autumn is just around the corner and things will be flowing. Looking forward to the next shoot! [Scott Thomas Blog]

Ganon Time on Hammer Time…Woohooo!

It was Ganon time on Hammer time last week! Outstanding coaching and basketballers eager to learn is any formula for success. Due to weather and unforeseen circumstances the original gym was flooded upon arrival. The parents were very patient and understanding of the situation as the organizers found a new gym that morning. Dave Omerod and your staff...Once again fabulous job organizing another memorable basketball camp! Gotta Love Saltfleet HS! Ready...Let's Go! The warm up was intense with discipline and lots of pushups. This camp is for improving and digging deep to mentally and physically challenge yourself, in and out of the classroom. I was completely impressed with MJ who is 6 months pregnant doing pushup to technical perfection. An inspiration to any athlete, parent or coach.

Ganon2

I loved the the fun "Wood"socks running and jumping around the gym on the last day to honor the spirit of Sydney Wood.  It was a celebratory day with lots of photo bombing, high fives, chest bumps and shirt signing.

Ganon3

At the end of camp this year a very special award was given out to two 11 yr old campers Skyler Rajasingham and Katie Dal Bello. Greg and Sue Wood presented both athletes with the Sydney Wood Spirit Award:

_RLW4044

"Our Daughter Sydney's spirit is vibrant, dynamic energetic and sparkling! So our family is extremely proud of joining in partnership with the Gannon Baker camp to award the first annual "Sydney Wood Spirit Award" to two campers who exemplify that kind and caring spirit during their time at camp. Sydney used the time at camp to improve her basketball skills but also to encourage ,support and cheer her fellow campers. We hope this award is a small stepping stone to keeping Sydney's kind and caring nature alive in the thoughts and hearts of those who know her and in those who get to know her through others. Our goal is to ensure that the children who exhibit that "Sydney Spirit" in the community are recognized and encouraged , and Sydney's spirit continues to sparkle as she is forever with us." Soccer Ice Cream

It was a smokin hot weekend at the Cobra Football Summer Classic in Rochester, NY.  Although I got a great tan, all I could see was this ice truck in the distance...FOCUS-FOCUS-FOCUS!  I got to shoot with my G+ photographer friend Scott Thomas at the first game of the tournament.  It was neat to see how he used his Radical Design Harness. I was supposed to shoot the Syracuse Crunch 7th game of the Calder Cup Series with Scott. I was so sad that it only went to game 6 and had to get my harness another day.  Meeting professional people online through G+ is amazing and I absolutely love the hangout feature. So stay tuned as I set up my harness to meet my specs and I post all about it's great features. Thank You Klaus for involving us in your prototype field test.

End of School Year Wrap Up!

LJ singing Bruno Mars, "If I were your man" to Ms.B at the 2013 Greensville Public School Talent Show.

Schools OUT Woooohoooooo! Catch Up-Catch Up-Catch Up---- to Ketchup on the BBQ! I probably should have posted this on Monday, but it has been CraAZEEEEEE!

Kids are out of school, but the last few weeks were chaos! Talent Show, Track and Field, Soccer and Basketball ruled my life. What better way than to tell you all about it in some photographs. At a public meet I always run into some photo fans who want me to pop a shot here and there. I love doing it and the more I understand my mission to promote activity in our youth the more rewarding it becomes.

What commitment! This boy from Memorial lost his shoe in the final metres of a race and finished with one shoe...Good For Him!

What I loved most about the meet this year was that my little girl met a friend who together shared 1st and 2nd in two different events.  They made a quick mutual respectful friendship and of course I took a photo of the two of them! Aer won the 100m and placed 2nd in high jump.  Tatyanna won high jump & placed 2nd in the 100m.  The following week they played each other in soccer-Sparta vs Saltfleet and a warm welcome of acknowledgement proceeded after the game......Coolio!!!

HWDSB Track and Field Meet

Now we all know how painful talent shows are, but this year I must admit I was looking forward to it. It's all about the kids learning self confidence and getting up in front of 100's of people to do their thing. LJ serenaded his teacher with Bruno Mars,  "If I were your man". It was so cute and Ms. B was such a good sport. He loves to sing so much that I may need to get him some serious vocal training. Oh yeah between all the other things like hockey, soccer, basketball, skiing, acting....and life in general! Another National commercial is in the works, so stay tuned!

Talent Show

Then we get into soccer. Although our new Hamilton Sparta soccer team is awesome. I miss the Dundas Dragon family! It was so nice to catch up!!!!! It is different when you work the attack on a new team. Aerial had to leave after the first half, but wanted to photograph the entire game. There were some great challenges and what better time spent than hanging out with a Sparta and Dragon at sunset!

“We Are Jackets” Tribute Poster

Blessed Sacrament 2012-2013 Major Atom Girls Basketball Team - 12x18 Poster "We Are Jackets"-Forever With Us! Sydney Wood 2001-2012

Certainly one of the most rewarding projects that I have ever done! When Mary inquired about getting information on a tribute gift for the Blessed Sacrament Major Atom Girls Basketball Team, I couldn't wait to get started. I never expected the final product to be this moving and rewarding:

"This picture is probably one of the best things I have ever received my in my life. The thought and love that went into creating this is amazing and very overwhelming. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart You have no idea what this means to me..."-Coach Greg

"WOW !!!! The Jackets can not thank Miss Robin and Aerial, her special helper for the absolutely wonderful photo that they delivered today to everyone. To see everyone's eyes widen and to hear the sharp intakes of breath as everyone saw the picture for the first time was a moment of pure joy. Robin, your pictures captured the personality of each girl and the love that they have for each other, their Coaches and their special angel Sydney . From the bottom of our hearts Love and Thanks to you.." Mary, aka GM
