Belgrade, Serbia – The Senior Women’s National Team (SWNT) wrapped up the Belgrade Trophy Tournament with a close 52-50 victory over Team Italy on Sunday (June 2). The win gives the Canadians a 2-1 record – good for second place – in the competition. Team Canada is now 4-1 on its current European tour.
The game opened with a flurry of activity from both ends of the court. The teams traded shots as each side looked to establish an early advantage with speed and offence. Canada held a 17-15 lead to close-out the first quarter on the strength of three 3-pointers. The teams settled into the game in the second frame as defence became a priority. Following a quiet quarter, the teams headed into halftime with Canada ahead 23-20.
Canada came out energized and focused looking to take control of the game. Three quick buckets propelled the Red and White to a 10-point lead – the team’s largest advantage of the game. With strong shooting and solid defence, Team Canada was ahead 38-30 after 30 minutes of play.
The fourth quarter told a very different tale. The Italian side seemed to find a second-wind and regained their earlier scoring touch. After a stunning 17-2 run to open the frame, head coach and Dundas native Lisa Thomaidis brought her troops in with a timeout. The coach’s words calmed the team and inspired Canada to respond with an 8-3 run of its own to close the gap to 50-48 with just over a minute to play.
The game would come down to free throws as the teams combined to shoot 12 times from the line in the match’s remaining moments. After two misses from the Italians, Canada would knot the game at 50 with two makes. Another pair of Italian misses would open the door for the Canadians to complete the comeback. Team Canada made two more free throws down the stretch to close-out the game 52-50.
The Canadians were led by Hamilton native and St. Thomas More student Kia Nurse who finished with 14 points and three rebounds. Nurse was pleased with the victory and credits the team’s work in its own end.
“Our defensive rotations really improved this game. We boosted our intensity and energy to push through to get the win. This game was the highlight of the trip so far for me because it was such a team effort – everyone contributed in some way.”
Thomaidis agreed with her youngest player’s assessment.
“This was a tremendous team win. The improvement on the defensive end that our team made over a 24-hour span is remarkable. I am so proud for our girls, we played 5 games in 6 days with a shortened bench. This game was a test of our fitness and resolve and we came out on top.”
Canada will continue its European tour by heading to France for a four-team tournament from June 7 to 9. The team will open the competition by playing the host country on Friday and Spain on Saturday. They will close-out the tournament with a date against these same Italians next Sunday.

It was the first game of the season in honor of our dear belated friend Sydney Wood. I never would have photographed this game against St. Marys vs St. Thomas More if it werent for Mallory (Sydney's Sister) taking to the court. Today (May 28th) would have been Sydney's 12th birthday and I want to repost those memorable photos from that day. Please take a moment to view more photos from Sydney Wood's Memorial Game. I had the opportunity to test the Nikon 300mm, 2.8 inside and outside over the last few weeks. The lens is perfect for capturing action normally not caught on the other end of the court, up close and personal portraits and a tight focus on the action. Finding the most efficient angle to alternate between focal lengths on separate camera bodies may take some practice, but the results are quite rewarding. Thank you Nikon Professional Service (NPS).
You can get a very good sense of competition when you walk in a gymnasium. The coach of this boys team was very animated in his coaching methods. I love watching great basketball and being entertained!
The referees are always fun to get to know and some even ham it up for the camera. Again funny thing...I haven't run into any of my hormonal interference ref"ettes" as of yet. All my dealings with referees have been with good humor, respect and super accommodating! Hey doesn't this guy look like LL Cool J?
Transway Major Atom Girls played a great final tournament of the season! It was a very close final game against the SMAC club from Ohio. Coming down to the final minutes Transway settled for Silver (Final: SMAC 33 - Transway 28)

Great Weekend for Hamilton Transway Major Atom Girls Basketball Team in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Transway placed 3rd in the tournament with a record 3-1-0.The Hamilton group had a lot of fun with laundry room parties, BBQ's, candy stripe pants, specialized shopping, birthday fun and even some cheerleading.
Some of the teams had some size, but in general the basketball was competitive. Another Great Experience!
It was nice to see the girls learn not to fall back at half and start to press. No more baby ball, so the girls can play a zone, double team, use a 28.5 basketball and finally play two-14min halves. Finally Real Basketball!

This will be the most memorable and cherished basketball season ever. The ironic part is that it wasn't even about winning on the court or celebrating championships. This season was about community growth, compassion and support. At the beginning of basketball season no one knew how the Blessed Sacrament Major Atom Girls would persevere. The loss of Sydney Wood, one of Blessed’s best players and dear friend was devastating and emotional for all to endure.

Throughout the season it was beautiful to see the girls grow stronger with purpose. They developed momentum with the encouragement of one another, coaches, family and friends. The relationships formed were not forced, but genuine and comforting. The Transway and Blessed Basketball moments of coming together have been the warmest heartfelt experiences ever.
After getting home from Bahamas we were off to the Sparta Classic Basketball Tournament at Michigan State. Transway met up with the Indiana G3 Hoosiers, a National (USA) Ranked #2 team. It was an exciting game to say the least. The basketball rules are very different in the United States. I believe it certainly develops better players and refereeing to a much more elite level.

The March break began with a tournament in Jordan, Ontario. The Dundas Select team played very well and had a lot of fun in Niagara Falls at the hotel...Not much sleep-FUN-FUN-FUN! I really enjoyed meeting Barry from Digital Sports Photography. DSP was shooting the tournament and selling prints/cd of the action. They did a great job and I look forward to working with Barry,DSP in the future. [Digital Sports Photography]

David Johnson (DJ) ran his 2013 March Break Elite Basketball Camp at Annunciation Catholic School, Hamilton-ON. The camp was very inspiring with daily quotes to ponder, a commemorative t-shirt fund in honour of Sydney Wood, intense strength & conditioning training, advance skill assessment and motivational coaching. It was wonderful to see the camaraderie among athletes from all teams come together.

Westcott Lighting recently awarded me with the 2400-watt 2-Light Spiderlite TD6 Perfect Portrait Kit & Icelight. I wanted to make my first project memorable and help pass it forward. The kids at the David Johnson March Break Camp have a passion for basketball. My compassion for Sydney has made me value these young years forever. On the last day of camp I did basketball sport portraits for all the athletes. I am very happy with the Westcott Pro Lighting results and plan to do a review in the future. Current provincial champions, the Transway Major Atom (grade 6) team recently competed in their first tournament of the regular season. They finished the weekend with a 4-0 record, repeating as gold medallists at the Dundas Dynamo 'Kick Off' Tournament. This year's tournament included teams from Kitchener, Welland, Toronto, Scarborough, and Hamilton. The Transway Major Atom girls do not need to travel far to compete at the highest level of basketball, as four of the top eight teams in the AAA division last year were from the greater Hamilton area, and several were also competing at this tournament The Transway team includes players from Ancaster, Burlington, Dundas, Hamilton and Stoney Creek. Pictured below from left to right are Back Row: Head Coach Ken Bachalo, Aerial Wilson, Emily Martindale, Yasmine Ahl Lamara, Manager Ron Calabrese, and Assistant Coach Carm Bozzo; Middle Row: Meira Morphet, Hanna Kristensen, Alessandra Chiarot, Olivia Mathews, Peyton Connolly, and Claire Sutherland-Case: Front Row: Sara Bozzo, Taylor Marof, Emilie Calabrese, and Kaillie Hall.
