Sydney Wood Basketball

This will be the most memorable and cherished basketball season ever. The ironic part is that it wasn’t even about winning on the court or celebrating championships.  This season was about community growth, compassion and support.  At the beginning of basketball season no one knew how the Blessed Sacrament Major Atom Girls would persevere. The loss of Sydney Wood, one of Blessed’s best players and dear friend was devastating and emotional for all to endure.

Throughout the season it was beautiful to see the girls grow stronger with purpose. They developed momentum with the encouragement of one another, coaches, family and friends. The relationships formed were not forced, but genuine and comforting. The Transway and Blessed Basketball moments of coming together have been the warmest heartfelt experiences ever.

David Johnson (DJ) ran his 2013 March Break Elite Basketball Camp at Annunciation Catholic School, Hamilton-ON. The camp was very inspiring with daily quotes to ponder, a commemorative t-shirt fund in honour of Sydney Wood, intense strength & conditioning training, advance skill assessment and motivational coaching. It was wonderful to see the camaraderie among athletes from all teams come together.

I posted at the end of the OBA’s this year a heartfelt message to the girls of Blessed Sacrament:

PLATINUM BLESSED SACRAMENT,

“Blessed you deserve more than Gold… You are Platinum all the way! The perseverance your team has endured throughout this difficult season has been endearing and most triumphant. Your inner beauty radiates on and off the court…Just like our beautiful Sydney. You show respect and love is teamwork and won the hearts of all.” Congratulations! xox Robin

Black and Yellow…Black and Yellow…Sydney “Woodsocks” Loved by all!

In honor of our dearly missed Sydney Wood, Blessed Sacrament invited the Transway girls basketball team to play a memorial game prior to the upcoming basketball season. The game was played during the Moore Hoops Basketball Tournament in Hamilton.  The Yellow Jackets wore proud a basketball with #11 over their heart and Transway to follow with a purple heart to remember Syd on the court.

After the Sydney Wood Memorial Game, I was able to shoot the first half of the St Thomas More Knights vs St Mary Crusaders in the Championship Finals. Best of luck to all the teams in their upcoming basketball season!

Cutie

As we move forward into soccer season the girls of Mount Hamilton will need our community support. The girls were most touched by the loss of our dearest Sydney when they had to come home from a tournament in Virginia Beach without their teammate [More]. Sydney will be the sunshine on the field this season. She will lift your spirits when you need comfort.  Sydney gave unimaginable strength to her basketball teammates and Mount Hamilton will be blessed too. “Your life is your message to the world. Make it inspiring.” – Unknown

Sydney Wood 2001-2012- Please wear PURPLE today in honor of Sydney’s Birthday (May 28, 2001)

I miss Syd and only wish I took more photographs of her. I posted this article in Sept. 2012 about what inspires me as a photographer…Before I left for PSW a little girl who touched many lives in our community passed away at a soccer tournament in West Virginia. Sydney Wood was an exceptional young lady and athlete who I had the honor to photograph in Soccer and Basketball. To help ease the pain, I compiled photographs over the last few years to love and honor Sydney and posted to YouTube. I offered the photographs to help ease the pain and download for comfort.

I was overwhelmed how the community embraced the photographs to help heal and honor Sydney in her most spirited light. Most of all I was blessed to have the ability to help, when so many were in need.

I’m on a journey and I’m seeking beauty in life. It may be gone tomorrow, but life is picturesque. It may be captured in a moment and experienced for a lifetime. This is what inspires me!
