Photographing in dimly lit gyms with natural and various light can be a challenge for any photographer. The temperature is ever changing. In a natural sunlit gym, the sun moves east to west. Intermittent pops of sun beam in from windows, skylights and open doors. This light can be unpredictable because of the environment outside…Never mind the consistent movement inside.
The backlight on your subject may be balanced or harsh shadows cast depending on where the action takes you. The most important thing is getting the shot. You can tweak noise and white balance after in post, but ya have to be agile. Anticipate how someone will jump/move predicts how you are going to frame your subject. If that means you have to move, do it. Sometimes random movement of a player, referee or ball will disrupt your focus or frame too. Don’t worry this happens to everyone.
Getting unique angles will depend on the movement you are trying to capture. If your lens is to close, focus in tighter on the eyes and get an over the shoulder shot, through the arm, low angle up. Don’t be afraid to lay on the ground or get a ladder to go high. You want to be different on your perspective and make your image different from the rest. Timing is everything. When photographing action watching with two eyes helps.
Do your best with full frame and leveling off with with leading lines on the floor, windows, doors, equipment, wall decor such as pennants etc. It doesn’t need to be perfect but balance the photo or eliminate busy distractions for your subject to stand out. Sometimes you just see a moment and need to pop a shot!
Over 100+ athletes and no rhyme or reason to whom I photograph. They were like little busy bumble bees flying around the gym, zzzzzzip, zzzzzzz-zzzzzip! When something grabs my attention I try to hone in and work every possible angle to get the best shot. I learn my subject and if I don’t get it the first time and I have another opportunity, I zone in to capture the moment. I do my best to photograph every child so they are not excluded, but my best photographs must include 3 basic elements: expression, action and technical perfection (clarity, rule of thirds, wb…)
Ok I’ll just do this once….My professional colleagues may think I’m crazy to post 1000’s of photos for clients to discover. Yes it is a lot of work, but my logic is that you may find beauty in an image that only you connect with and no one else understands. For example: You may look like someone in your family because of the expression you are making, Funny habits like sticking your tongue out when you concentrate, Intimate body language that only you appreciate, Special moments that you personally value etc.
